About Uluwatu Temple

Pura Luhur Uluwatu more known as Uluwatu Temple stands as one of Bali's most magnificent and spiritually significant temples, dramatically positioned at a towering limestone cliff 70 meters above the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. It is believed to be built since 11th-century, this hindu temple is not only an architectural marvel but also one of the seven key temples believed to be Bali's spiritual pillars.

The name "Uluwatu" derives from "Ulu" meaning head or top, and "Watu" meaning stone, perfectly describing its clifftop location. Built by the revered sage Mpu Kuturan, the temple is dedicated to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa in his manifestation as Rudra. The temple's unique position offers visitors breathtaking panoramic views of the endless ocean horizon.

Uluwatu is famous for its resident population of playful grey langur monkeys, considered guardians of the temple, be careful when you visit the site, there are cases of agressive stealing by the monkeys. These mischievous primates are known for their bold personalities and tendency to snatch visitors' belongings, particularly sunglasses, hats, and food.

The temple is perhaps best known for hosting the mesmerizing Kecak fire dance performances during sunset, which are held regularly. This traditional Balinese dance-drama tells the story of the Ramayana epic through trance-like chanting by a circle of men around a sacred fire, creating an unforgettable cultural experience against the backdrop of the setting sun.
