About Tirta Empul Temple

Tirta Empul Temple, known locally as Pura Tirta Empul, stands as one of Bali's most sacred and spiritually significant Hindu water temples, located in Manukaya Village, Gianyar. The temple is dedicated to Vishnu, who is the Hindu God of water. Built around a natural spring in 962 AD, this ancient temple complex has been a place of pilgrimage and purification for over 1,000 years, believed to be purifying both devout Hindus and curious visitors from around the world.

The temple's name translates to "Holy Spring" in Balinese, referring to the sacred water that bubbles up from the earth and feeds the temple's purification pools. According to Hindu-Balinese belief, these waters possess powerful healing and cleansing properties, capable of washing away sins, negative energy, and physical ailments. The spring is said to have been created by the God Indra to revive his army after they were poisoned by the demon king Mayadenawa.

The temple complex consists of three courtyards: the outer courtyard (Jaba Pisan), the middle courtyard (Jaba Tengah), and the inner sanctum (Jeroan). The most famous feature is the rectangular purification pool fed by 30 sacred water spouts, each representing different Hindu gods and offering specific blessings and healing properties.

What makes Tirta Empul truly special is the authentic purification ritual experience. Visitors from around the world come to participate in the Melukat ceremony, a tradition for purification. This spiritual journey involves moving through each water spout in a specific order, making offerings, and allowing the holy water to cleanse both body and soul.
