Pura Lempuyang Gates of Heaven

Pura Lempuyang, often called the Gates of Heaven, is one of Bali’s oldest and most sacred temples. It’s located in eastern Bali, on the side of Mount Lempuyang, and is known for its calm, spiritual vibe and beautiful surroundings.

The temple is most famous for its split gate, which lines up perfectly with Mount Agung, Bali’s tallest volcano. On a clear day, the view is absolutely stunning and makes for an amazing photo, which is why so many travelers love visiting this spot.

You might notice photos that look like the gate is reflected in water. That “reflection” is actually a simple mirror trick used by local photographers. Even without the illusion, the view of the gate with Mount Agung in the background is truly impressive and well worth seeing in person.

Visiting Pura Lempuyang is an experience on its own. The whole complex is made up of seven temples spread along the mountain. The main temple sits right at the top, and getting there means a long and challenging hike. The good news is that the famous Gates of Heaven are at the very first temple, called Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang. Since it’s at the lowest point, most visitors can easily reach it without needing to do the full climb.
