Uluwatu Beach sits at the base of towering limestone cliffs on Bali's Bukit Peninsula, directly beneath the legendary Uluwatu Temple. It's one of the island's most famous surf destinations, known for long, powerful left-hand waves that peel perfectly along the reef.
To reach the sand and surf, you descend a series of steep stairs and pass through cave-like rock formations before stepping out to the ocean. At low tide, small patches of sand appear along the shoreline, while at mid to high tide the focus is all about the waves and the surfers riding them.
Above the cliffs you'll find iconic clifftop bars and warungs where you can watch sunset sessions with a cold drink in hand. The atmosphere is lively but still feels wild and rugged, with the sound of waves crashing against the rocks far below.
Uluwatu is best suited for experienced surfers, but even if you don't surf, it's absolutely worth visiting for the dramatic views, sunsets, and the nearby temple's famous Kecak dance performance at dusk.
Famous for its long left-hand reef break and powerful waves that draw experienced surfers from all over.
Wide-open views from the limestone cliffs, with the Indian Ocean stretching out and surfers lining up below.
Watch surfers glide across the waves as the sun sets directly over the ocean from the clifftop bars above.
Chill at simple warungs or iconic bars with unbeatable wave and sunset views.
